This year I made it a goal to read as much as I could; which, if you know me, you know that I can’t sit still for very long before running to the next project. Sometimes the thought of just sitting and holding a book makes me want to move! So, to say this was going to be challenging would not be wrong. BUT, I love a good solution to a problem, and so I found Audible.com
I spend A LOT of time in the car, so being able to listen to books was a serious win for me! I was able to read and/or listen to 36 books this year!! Some of these books I actually bought both the hard copy and the audio version because I loved the work that they had me do. And that doesn’t even include the cookbooks I got!! I only bought 12 cookbooks this year, Tony is very thankful for that. I have a couple of bookshelves in my studio to house my cookbooks as my collection has grown to an embarrassing level! I listed the ones I got this year too ‘cause they are good ones!!!
I think that my 3 very favorite books this year have been Building a StoryBrand, By Donald Miller, Sell It Like Serhant, By Ryan Serhant and Living Forward By Michael Hyatt. All 3 for very different reasons. If you love marketing, Building a StoryBrand is hands down a MUST! Sell It Like Serhant is GREAT, I love his energy and his life outlook, seriously good! AND then Living Forward, I can’t thank my friend Jenna of The Intern Hustle who I met in San Diego at Amy Porterfield’s B-School Bonus Weekend – Jenna wrote a great article on the book here
Rocket Fuel, By Gino Wickman, Mark C. Winters – so good if you work with someone and you are a total planner – I was supercharged by this book
Blue Ocean Strategy, By Renee Mauborgne, W. Chan Kim
Never Split the Difference, Chris Voss
Traction, By Gin Wickman
Girl Wash Your Face, By Rachel Hollis – every mom should read this with their teenaged daughter – just my humble opinion.
Built to Sell, By John Warrillow
Being Mortal, By Atul Gawande – this book totally changed my outlook on what I want when I face aging. Dealing with a MIL that is in an assisted living facility, it gave me a lot of perspective!
Mindset, By Carol Dweck – in a word – right??!!
Finish, By Jon Acuff – because I'm working on a couple of BIG personal project launching the first of the year, I so needed this one!
The 5 Second Rule, By Mel Robbins – really appreciated this one, because you can do anything, tell yourself and then move yourself 5-4-3-2-1 DO IT
Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike, Phil Knight – LOVED this, because building a business is about so many things and this book was real! Also, changed my mind about LaBron James – odd I know, but if someone gives a sentimental gift – DUDE, you win my heart. PLUS, I love basketball – little known Penny fact right there.
Change your Brain, Change Your Life, By Daniel G. Amen M.D.
Black Box Thinking, By Matthew Syed
Building a StoryBrand, By Donald Miller – GET THIS BOOK if you are in marketing. Just trust me.
Dare to Lead, By Brene Brown – So many take aways, even though read with business in mind, just the simple phrase of the story we tell ourselves will change your life, I'm not kidding.
Sell It Like Serhant, By Ryan Serhant – I don't really like his Bravo TV show – sorry – BUT if I could go to coffee with Ryan I so WOULD. He gets it, has a great view on things, loves his zest and go get 'em'ness and basically everything about this book. One day, I will have lunch with him and talk business – I'm serious – I'm putting it out there and I'm going to make it happen!
The Science of Fear, By Daniel Gardner – good stuff right here on how our mind rationalizes things
This is Marketing, By Seth Godin – YES, another really good one, especially if you are trying to create something that means something.
Living Forward By Michael Hyatt – GET THIS BOOK – LIFE changing. You gotta have a plan. So good!
Ego is the Enemy, By Ryan Holiday
